Holiday Pet Safety Tips

Have a Holly, Jolly, and Safe Holiday Season!

• When decorating your tree, use plastic ornaments rather than glass.
• Keep Christmas lights up high and out of reach of your animals, loose wires can be harmful to your pets
• Do not use tinsel - cats and puppies are likely to play with and swallow it causing internal damage, which could ultimately lead to a trip to the vet.
• Cover the water of the tree with tinfoil or a blanket. Christmas trees may contain toxins from the fertilizer that seep into the water, which is dangerous to your pets if they drink it.
• Securely anchor your tree to prevent it from falling on and potentially injuring your pet.

• Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are all toxic to animals when ingested – consider showcasing an artificial plant.

• Holiday gatherings can be overwhelming to our pets, give them their own quite space complete with fresh water, bedding and toys. If your pet prefers their kennel, make sure it is easily accessible and away from the party.
• New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest days for pets to run away due to fireworks and loud noises. Make sure your dog or cat is in a safe, escape-proof space as the clock ticks closer to midnight.

Travel

• If travelling with your four-legged companions, make certain their ID tags and microchips are up-to-date with the proper contact information.
• While travelling in a car, plan for the proper carrier or kennel and make sure to stop plenty of times for your animal to relieve themselves.
• NEVER leave your pets unattended in the car.
• For pets that need medication or are on a special diet, it is important to bring the proper amount needed for the time you will be away. Give yourself plenty of time to contact your veterinarian and refill prescriptions, if needed.
• Research animal clinics and hospitals in the area where you will be staying in case of emergency.
